Do you exercise a week before your period?

In a recent article in the New York Daily News, researchers from the University of Texas at Austin and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill say that reducing exercise a week before your period may save your knees.

It is already known that women suffer more knees injuries than men, especially in sports.

"The researchers measured the activity of motor units, nerve fibers and the muscles they control, around the knees of seven female volunteers  aged between 19 and 35, at various point of their menstrual cycles"

"They found that the bundles of nerves in the knee had firing rates that were significantly higher in the late luteal phase, about a week before a woman's next period, compared to earlier in the menstrual cycle. The researchers noted that this difference in firing rate could affect the stability of the joint, potentially affecting its susceptibility to injury."

This suggests that it is preferable to reduce sports approximately a week before your period to avoid knees injuries.
